We discuss various ways in which these trees are devel- oped in Chapter 2. Bristles bordering the mouth and thousands of overlapping cuticular plates in the pharynx serve as fil- ters so that only very small particles (< 1 µm) enter the gut. If we start with a generalized, rather homono- mous arthropod prototype with a fairly high number of segments, and with paired appendages on each of those segments, we can set the stage for just such a dramatic diversification.
